Question:
DIY data recovery - Can I run some kind of data recovery utilities on my drive before I send it to you?
Answer:
Not unless you are sure that your disk had suffered only logical system corruption and you have the correct techniques of doing the recovery. There is always a risk of permanent data loss if the process is done improperly. In fact most of the customers who failed to get back their data were those who tampered with the data media after the initial failure. In some cases, it may also complicate the recovery process and add to recovery cost. If you really need to try this option, ensure that the problem disk is always connected as "read only" drive.
